Author Talk: An Evening with Ted Reinstein

Ted is back for another entertaining and enlightening discussion, this time about New England’s General Stores.

In the book, co-authors Ted Reinstein and former ABC journalist Anne-Marie Dorning profile some of New England’s most beloved and longtime landmark stores, many of which have risen up from the ‘retail mat’ against seemingly overwhelming odds. It turns out that folks miss meeting up in the neighborhood. When it comes to a genuine gathering place, box stores don’t really cut it. But a general store still does. New England’s General Stores: Exploring an American Classic looks at how, where, and why this has all happened.

In talking about New England’s General Stores: Exploring an American Classic, broadcast journalist Ted Reinstein shares the rich and colorful history of this iconic institution, how they figured in the rise of early American commerce, why they began to fade, and why—like another New England icon, the diner—they have begun to come back and even be re-invented and re-imagined for a new era. Told with anecdotes from a variety of local landmark stores across the region, the presentation is accompanied by the award-winning photography of Art Donahue.
