Minutes

October 10, 2006

 

 

Meeting called to order at 8:05 p.m.

 

Present: Trustees present included D. Crowell, A. Hafer, M. Pulizzi, M. Ross, and P. Russo.  Director R. Callaghan and Assistant Director V. Abraham were also present.  Trustees R. Dyer and L. O’Connor were absent.

 

Secretary’s Report:

P. Russo made motion to accept the 09/12/06 minutes.  Seconded by M. Ross.  Vote: 5-0

 

Director’s Report:

Director Callaghan reported on activities:

·        Circulation is considerably higher than in 2005.

·        Downloadable audio use is up.  Staff is effectively handling patron questions.

·        Friend’s book sale brought in over $5,000.

P. Russo made motion to accept the Director’s Report.  Seconded by M. Pulizzi.  Vote: 5-0 to accept.

 

 

Unfinished Business:

 

Parking Lighting:  A letter was sent to the town administrator reminding him of the need to put in additional lighting prior to winter.

 

Lights in Circulation and Mezzanine:  NSTAR Small Business Solutions Program is giving advice and installing replacement fixtures.  Cost of less than $3,000 for services valued over $14,000.  Ray has independently identified, coordinated and handled execution of this program and the Trustees have asked Director Callaghan to place a letter in Ray’s file expressing appreciation and noting the commendable and cost saving effort.

 

 

 New Business

 

New Capital Request will include:

·        Replacement of carpet in the meeting room.

·        Shingle replacement on 1968 portion of roof.

·        Replacement of security gate.

 

Young Adult Room:  Plans to expand the young adult room were discussed and Trustees suggested that a formal plan be created for review.

 

Staff Training:  M. Pulizzi made motion to accept the Director’s request for the library to be closed for a half day on December 7, 2006 for staff training.  Motion also includes refreshments to be supplied.  Seconded by M. Ross.  Vote: 5-0 to accept.

 

 

Winter Programs: 

·        Four part video series in January and February on the Great Depression given by Dan Breen.  Professor Breen will also lecture on the 150th anniversary of the Dred Scott decision in March.(FYI- Bedford previous series on World War I has already had requests for use by Wilbraham and Quincy).

·        Irish music event with Tom O’Carroll on March 25th.

 

DVD Checkout Limitations:  The library has eliminated the limit on the number of DVDs a patron can check out – this does not include children’s and Chinese DVDs.
